The Scottish actor Alan Cumming, who is a big success as the mutant superhero Nightcrawler in X-2: X-Men United, could be following in Jim Carrey's footsteps by donning The Mask.

Cumming is negotiating to star in Son Of The Mask, which is due to begin filming this summer, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The new film will carry on the premise of a character-altering mask that was established in Carrey’s 1994 blockbuster, but this time it will follow an aspiring cartoonist, played by Jamie Kennedy, who is not ready for fatherhood but finds himself raising a baby endowed with the powers of the mask of LOKI, played by Cumming.

It is another major role for Cumming, who won a Tony award for his stage role in Cabaret and who is currently working on his new television series, Mr and Mr Nash, in which he will play one of a pair of interior designers who solve murders on the side.
