Oasis shortlisted for best song award

Oasis hit Stop Crying Your Heart Out will battle with tracks by Aqualung and David Gray for the accolade of the past year’s best song, it was announced today.

The three acts are on the shortlist for the top title at the Ivor Novello songwriting awards which are held next month.

Ms Dynamite, The Streets and Coldplay are up for the best contemporary song - reflecting the spirit of the times – at the respected Novellos.

Gray’s effort The Other Side and Aqualung’s Strange and Beautiful – made famous by a VW ad – together with the Oasis tune, have been heavily featured as TV incidental music.

They are nominated for best song musically and lyrically at the annual celebration of songcraft, held by the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters.

Contemporary song nominees are Mercury Music Prize-winner Ms Dynamite’s It Takes More, Streets’ Weak Become Heroes and Coldplay’s In My Place.

Nominees for the best dance track are Shake Ur Body by Shy FX, Lazy by X-Press 2 and It Just Won’t Do by Tim Deluxe.

At the London event on May 22 organisers will hand out a number of awards based on sales and airplay.

Classical composers and TV and film score writers are also honoured. The songwriter of the year will also be named at the bash which often attracts many of the biggest acts in the music world.
