Pop search to help young artists

If you think you’ve got the talent and the looks to be a star, head down to HMV now.

The music store is launching the HMV New Music Search, a unique new way for the next generation of up-and-coming bands and artists to bring their work to the attention of the record industry. Every store throughout Ireland and the UK are participating in this venture, so you can pick up your entry kit at your nearest store.

Once the entry details have been filled out, with a demo CD included, the kit should be returned to the store.

Every demo will then be forwarded to db Records, the independent label responsible for hot young talents such as Tom McRae and the Electric Soft Parade. db Records will have the final say about which bands or artists are recorded, but rest assured that every entrant will be considered.

There are no entry deadlines and demos can be dropped in on a regular, year-round basis. If you are the lucky ones, you could land a possible deal with db, and have your music featured on HMV’s monthly Playlist CD, an audio showcase of hot-tipped new acts.

John Taylor, HMV Europe Marketing Director, explains more. He says: “This initiative is about discovering bands and artists with the potential to become of long-term significance, something that’s vital to the health of every sector of the UK music industry.

David Bates, founder of db Records adds: “I must emphasise this is not a talent contest. We’re trying to make it easier for young artists to get their music heard.

“I’m convinced there’s plenty of exciting new talent across Ireland and the UK, and I very much hope that the simplicity of the HMV New Music Search will act as a major encouragement to them. As it’s not a competition, there’s nothing to lose – only something to gain.”
