Reworked 80s soul classic Make Luv stormed in at number one today after captivating audiences on a television advert where a geeky guy attracts two girls with his funky dancing.

Room 5 featuring Oliver Cheatham, the singer on the original 1983 classic Get Down (Saturday Night), knocked Gareth Gates’ Spirit In The Sky from the UK top spot thanks to the publicity generated with the Lynx Pulse advert.

Many critics are dubbing the retro disco groove release to be the big dancefloor hit of the summer.

Meanwhile, Madonna’s latest outburst at manufactured pop acts seems to have fallen on deaf ears as Gates’ Comic Relief charity single, featuring television comedy family the Kumars, rested at number two after a two-week stint at number one.

In an interview with music magazine Q, Madonna said the music industry had become “homogenised” with music bosses more concerned about marketing wannabes rather than finding true talent.

But, despite bagging Grammy and Brit awards, Coldplay’s acknowledged musical talent failed to gain recognition in the chart stakes as new single Clocks came in at a disappointing number nine.

Meanwhile, Irish boyband Westlife fared better with their Cliff Richard cover Tonight/ Miss you Nights coming in at number three in the singles’ charts.

Pop veterans Simply Red managed to hold onto their position in the top 10 at number 10 with their come-back single Sunrise, down three from number seven.

Simply Red did better in the album chart straight in at number two with Home, beaten to the top spot by Linkin Park’s album Meteora.

The two new arrivals meant that Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me finally slipped from the number one spot down to number three.
