War casts long shadow over Oscar ceremony

The Academy Awards forged ahead last night in Hollywood after days of speculation that the war in Iraq would send Oscar packing.

The conflict was not ignored, colouring the tone of many acceptance speeches inside the Kodak Theatre, while outside, hundreds of police in riot gear were drafted in as anti-war protesters thronged the neighbouring streets.
