Far from Heaven sweeps Independent awards

Far From Heaven was snubbed at last night’s Oscars but it was the toast of Saturday’s Independent Spirit Awards.

The 1950s-era drama swept all five categories in which it was nominated, including Best Feature, Best Female Lead for Julianne Moore, Best Supporting Male for Dennis Quaid, and Todd Haynes as Best Director. The film also earned a Spirit for cinematography.

Other top winners included: Derek Luke, named Best Male Lead for Antwone Fisher; Emily Mortimer was honoured as Best Supporting Female for Lovely and Amazing; and Nia Vardalas triumphed as Best Debut Performer for My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

While rumours had stars dropping out of Sunday’s could-be Oscars over security and concerns regarding the Iraqi bombing, the usually low-key Independent Spirit Awards had a big dose of star power with a surprise appearance by Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston.
