Banderas to star on Broadway

Antonio Banderas is finally fulfilling his ambition to star in a Broadway musical.

The Spanish actor, who is married to Melanie Griffith, opens in April in Nine, a revival of the musical based on Federico Fellini's 1963 film 8 1/2.

“Broadway musicals and London’s West End are the reason I am an actor,” he told the New York Post.

“This is something I would have loved to do a long time ago but I didn’t have the preparation before to go on the stage speaking English for nearly three hours and singing songs at the same time.”

Chita Rivera, 70, who co-stars in the revival, said of him: “He dances the tango like, ‘Oh, my God!’ There’s a moment where I just look at the women in the audience and think, ‘I’ve got him and you haven’t’.”
