Bafta stars get taste of Hollywood glamour

A touch of Oscars glamour was coming to the Baftas tonight – in the form of Britain’s most exclusive showroom.

Bafta stars have been preening themselves for the red carpet at Claridges, where some of the hottest designers, make-up artists, jewellers and hair stylists have Htaken up residence.

Jimmy Choo shoes, diamonds giant De Beers, Nicky Clarke hair, Mac cosmetics and fashion designer Emanuel Ungaro have taken over six suites, the whole of the first floor, of the exclusive Mayfair hotel since Friday.

The function is the first of its kind in London and mirrors some of the pre-Oscar events in Hollywood.

Some celebrities have stayed at Claridges for the last couple of nights, where they have been busying themselves trying new hairstyles, make-up, diamonds and outfits.

An internal corridor links the six suites, ensuring the stars get maximum privacy while they receive one-to-one advice on what to wear on their big night, and they will not have to part with a penny.

White Teeth and 28 Days Later star Naomie Harris, Magdalene Sisters star Geraldine McEwan and Sophia Myles, who plays Lady Penelope in the new Thunderbirds movie, have all had their hair done at Claridges.

Nicky Clarke, account director Enza Distasi, said: “This is the sort of thing that goes on before the Oscars but it has never happened in London before.

“It has been hugely successful. We are all in agreement that next year companies will be chomping at the bit to be involved.

“The celebrities feel totally spoilt and they think what we have done is fantastic.

“They don’t have to worry about running down Bond Street – they can save their heels.”

Naomie Harris said: “I found a designer dress that I was going to wear, and was going to do my hair myself.

“But I came to Claridges at the last minute, and have got everything done, the make-up, the dress, the hair, the jewellery.

“It’s great to get it done by the experts. Now I understand why they look so great at the Oscars.”
