Scorsese philosphical about awards

Legendary director Martin Scorsese is philosophical about his chances of winning an Oscar or a Directors Guild of America (DGA) award for his epic film Gangs of New York.

Remarkably, Scorsese has never won either a DGA prize or an Academy Award despite four previous DGA nominations and three Oscar nods.

He tells the Los Angeles Daily News: “I remember the Seventies, not winning for Taxi Driver – not even a nomination – or Raging Bull, and then not winning in the Eighties for The Last Temptation of Christ or in the Nineties for GoodFellas.

“I had to be philosophical and tell myself, ’I did get to make the movies, so I can’t complain.”

And whether he wins or not at the awards ceremonies, which both take place next month, he is being honoured with the DGA’s Lifetime Achievement award and says: “I’m beyond pleased with that.”

Scorsese is also preparing to put his Gangs of New York star Leonardo DiCaprio in another picture – The Aviator – which starts production in June.
