Revengers Tragedy

Director: Alex Cox

Cast: Derek Jacobi, Christopher Eccleston, Diana Quick, Eddie Izzard, Sophie Dahl

Cert: Club.

An interesting up-date of a 17th Century play by Thomas Middleton (and originally performed by Shakespeare's own company).

The Jacobean drama is now set in a Liverpool of the future, rife with corruption and ruled by an evil Duke (Jacobi) who is faced down by a returned avenger (Eccleston). A simple enough plot, but here handled with accomplished care by a director clearly regaining all his old skills.

The acting is universally excellent and it's an unusual piece of film-making.
