The sort of film this is - young woman seeks escape from her penetratingly annoying, loud and slightly mad Mexican family - needs a more constraining hand upon it than Cardoso manages.

It would also have helped if the screenplay had been more inventive, and better written, and the characters more rounded-out. Ultimately, we don't really care for any of the characters since to be in their company brings us little joy.
