Irreversible has controversial power

Screened at the Cannes Film Festival, this French shocker - and it truly is - comes with 'controversy' written all over it.
At its South of France showing, people fainted, staggered out, booed and there was a running behind-the-scenes battle over its inclusion in the programme. With all that, it's doubtless a film everybody will be rushing to see.
It stars real-life husband and wife - Cassel and Bellucci - and it features one of the most horrible rape scenes ever filmed. The scene is, it has to be said, cleverly shot but it is still something to turn the stomach and make you wonder about the boundaries of artistic taste.
The theme of the film is, of course, rape and its consequences and there is certainly a lot to discuss after you see it. Your post-viewing coffee will hardly be enough to restore your faith in the human condition.
