A 14-year-old Harry Potter fan was left spellbound today after a signed first edition of the wizard adventure fetched £3,200 (€4,885) at auction.

Matthew Lawson, from Fife, sold his prized copy of Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets, to help fund his future university education.

The book was bought for £10.99 (€16.78) by his aunt five years ago.

Matthew said: “I can’t believe how much the book made, I am absolutely thrilled.

“I am going to buy my aunt a present with some of the money because she gave me the book as a present.”

The book, signed by J K Rowling, was bought by an anonymous Edinburgh businessman for his two children who are keen Potter fans.

The buyer is understood to be collecting all the first editions of the Potter novels.

A spokesman for Lyon and Turnbull said they were delighted with the prices fetched by both books.

“The Harry Potter book was in pristine condition, which is why it fetched the better price.

There is huge interest in everything to do with Harry Potter, because of the added popularity of the films.
