DJ Zoe Ball put on a brave face as she returned to the airwaves today for the first time since her marriage split emerged, and admitted: “You’ve got to laugh or you’ll cry.”
The presenter tried to make light of her trial separation from husband Norman Cook by asking listeners to suggest the most inappropriate tracks for her predicament.
Asked how her weekend had been, Ball quipped: “Oh a bit quiet, not much going on really.”
And she acknowledged the increased interest in her afternoon programme on London station 104.9 XFM: “Welcome all new listeners to the show today – and members of the press.
Ball, 32, also laughed off suggestions that she had been linked with comic Johnny Vegas: “I ask you!”
She and Cook – better known as chart star, club DJ and producer Fatboy Slim - had admitted they are having marriage difficulties.
Ball has been living in north London for several days a week after taking on the XFM show, while her 39-year-old husband continues to live at their home in Hove, east Sussex.
The pair have blamed their hectic workloads for their difficulties.
Ball told listeners today: “You’ve got to laugh or you’ll cry. I have to say I drove to London yesterday and I was listening to Neil Diamond in the car. I was singing Song Sung Blue, that’s how messy I’m feeling at the moment.
She joked: “We were considering getting a bottle of Jack Daniels, well a crate of Jack Daniels, to help us through this week of turmoil. Not that I’m an alcoholic or anything like that.”
Among the songs suggested by listeners today were Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now by The Smiths and Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division.
