Touchy topic for CBS

American TV network CBS has agreed to script changes and is planning a donation to a Jewish group in a bid to get a controversial mini-series about Hitler off the ground.

The project, tentatively called Hitler: Origins of Evil, will star Full Monty actor Robert Carlyle as the young fuhrer during his rise to power.

The network has come under fire from Jewish groups who have expressed concern it was making Hitler a sympathetic figure by humanising him.

CBS is to make a donation in connection with the series, but has not decided which group or how much.

The script, written by Ian Kershaw, was also rewritten in consultation with historians and religious leaders.

The four-hour mini-series has started filming in Prague and is due to be screened in the US in May.
