Not all the cast of the long-running sitcom Friends have transferred successfully from the small to the large screen.
But raise a cheer for Aniston who finally comes good in a well-crafted film with a performance which has garnered her much support for an Oscar.
She plays a thirty something Texas store clerk whose life needs some excitement - some colour, some romance (except from slobbish husband, Reilly). Into this unsatisfied life comes a troubled wannabe writer (Gyllenhaal) and they embark on a stuttering romance; which leads to problems.
It is a film of darkness and rich comedy and the playing of Aniston and Gyllenhaal is a positive treat, aided in great part by Mike White's mature and thoughtful screenplay.
Aniston finally finds the perfect cinema role for her talents … an Oscar wouldn't be out of place.
4/5.
