Irish film sector employed 17,000 last year

More than 17,000 people were employed in the film sector in Ireland last year and €22m was generated in tax revenue for the State, according to the annual Irish audiovisual report.

However, Tommy McCabe, a director of the Audiovisual Federation, said the industry will suffer if the Government ends tax breaks for film producers in 2004.

"It'll make us far less competitive vis-a-vis other countries," he said.

"We have a two-year period to have discussions with the Government and we are confident that we will be able to show the benefits to the Irish economy, not just in terms of creating jobs and returns to the Irish Exchequer, but also the cultural remit."
