Jeremy Clarkson is the latest guest host of Have I Got News For You, it was announced today.

The Top Gear presenter will front the final show in the current series, filling the chair vacated by the sacked Angus Deayton.

It will be Clarkson’s first ever appearance on the BBC1 topical quiz show.

He will be joined by regular team captains Paul Merton and Ian Hislop, plus guests Mo Mowlam and Michael Grade in the show to be transmitted on December 20.

Have I Got News For You has featured a series of special guest hosts since Deayton was axed over tabloid revelations about his private life.

Anne Robinson, John Sergeant, Boris Johnson and Liza Tarbuck have all stepped into Deayton’s shoes, and Merton also a did stint in the presenter’s chair.

This Friday’s episode will be hosted by Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy, with author Will Self as one of the guests.

Names in the frame for a full-time replacement for Deayton have included Clive Anderson, Stephen Fry and Sanjeev Bhaskar.
