Eight times married actress Zsa Zsa Gabor was falling in and out of a coma in a Los Angeles hospital today two days after he car hit a lamp poll as she set off on shopping trip.

She suffered multiple broken bones, cuts and bruises, said her husband, Frederic von Anhalt.

“She can’t talk,” he said. “She opens her eyes, but we don’t know if she recognises us.” He said her condition nonetheless appeared to be improving in the Cedars-Sinai hospital.

The 85-year-old Hungarian-born actress was in the front passenger seat of a car driven by her hairdresser when it hit the lamp post on Sunset Boulevard, von Anhalt said. Her hairdresser was also in hospital.

“The engine went into the front seat,” von Anhalt said.

However, Gabor’s daughter, Constance Francesca Hilton, said her mother had a broken arm, but no other serious injuries. She denied her mother had been in a coma.

Leslie Porras, a spokeswoman for Cedars-Sinai, said Gabor was in serious condition but declined to give additional information.

For decades, the glamorous, Hungarian-born Gabor has epitomised the celebrity who is famous for being famous. Her furs, jewels, looks – and humour – kept her in the news long after her film career faded.

She was married eight times among her husbands were hotel millionaire Conrad Hilton and Oscar-winning actor George Sanders. She married von Anhalt in 1986.

“Personally, I know nothing about sex because I have always been married,” she joked in a 1987 speech to the American Bar Association.

Gabor, sisters Eva and Magda, and their mother, Jolie, all emigrated to America in the 1940s.

Eva, who had starred in the television show Green Acres, died in 1995 aged 74. Mother Jolie died in 1997 aged 97 and Magda, who lived largely out of the spotlight, also died in 1997, aged 78.

In 1989, Gabor was sentenced to 72 hours in jail for slapping a Beverly Hills police officer. She also was ordered to perform 120 hours of community service at a women’s shelter.
