With the coming Harry Potter and this film, Richard Harris departs us on a high.

The Irish actor, who died recently, turns in a memorable performance as a Liverpool gangster who, following the death of his wife (Redgrave), finds himself sinking into a mire of revenge during which his three daughters turn against him.

This is King Lear, of course, transferred to bleak Liverpool and directed with some skill by Boyd, who has an eye for his environments and who allows his characters to be developed fully by a strong cast.

It is, too, a film enhanced by several powerful set-pieces as we follow the falling apart of a powerful man.

It is a fitting tribute to one of Ireland's greatest actors. We shall miss him.
