High Crimes
Director: Carl Franklin
Cast: Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, Jim Caviezel, Bruce Davison
Cert: 15PG.
We have here a yarn which comes with all the stock courtroom thriller characters - the female for the defence (Judd), the loveable old codger with a line of patter (Freeman), the dodgy accused (Caviezel) and a plot that's so downright daft that anybody following it with any degree of attention should be put away for a long, long time.
Judd is an attorney whose husband (Caviezel) is accused of taking part in a mass killing some years before in El Salvador. Well, OK, he admits, he has a secret past - he was there, he did take part in the crime - but he was only obeying orders.
Well, OK, says loving wife, you might have told me about your past but I'll defend you, with the help of the loveable old codger.
And, plotwise, nothing works or makes sense or surprises us - apart from the fact that the film was ever made.
Lock them all up - and throw away the keys!
