Harsh words greet Fame Academy wannabes

Wannabe celebrities have had their first taste of the strict regime of the Fame Academy with the stern words: "This isn't a holiday camp".

Last night, the 12th contestant, who will join the others on live TV in a bid to win the lifestyle of a superstar, was named as Irish woman 22-year-old Sinead Quinn, who won the vote of just over half of the viewers of the BBC1 show.

The group faces a gruelling dawn-til-dusk regime in the coming months at the £35m (€55m) reality TV mansion in north London.

Top tutors from the showbiz world will drill them into shape but each week the hopeful who fails to live up to expectations will be voted out by the contestants and the public.

The winner is promised a £1m (€1.6m) recording deal and the chance to live as a star with all the joys and trappings of fame - including a West London flat and sports car - for a year.

The 12 finalists now in the Fame Academy are:

Ainslie Henderson, 23, a singer-songwriter originally from Hawick in Scotland

Ashley House, 28, an economics teacher from Cheltenham

Camilla Beeput, 21, from north London who had been due study at Ealing Drama Studios next month

Chris Manning, 23, from Poole in Dorset who works in IT

Katie Lewis, 18, a student from Bristol

Lemar Obika, 24, an accounts manager at a high street bank from north London

Malachi Cush, 22, a gas fitter from County Tyrone in Northern Ireland

Marli Buck, a 27-year-old eating disorders counsellor and nursing assistant from Lytham St Anne's, Lancashire

Naomi Roper, a 19-year-old student from the Scottish Borders but now based in London

Nigel Wilson, a 31-year-old father-of-four and vehicle sales manager from Scunthorpe

Pippa Fulton, 20, a stage school student from Hull.

Sinead Quinn, a 22-year-old part-time barmaid from Ireland.
