King returns to rule over album charts
Elvis fan Darren Day got his fans all shook up today when he helped launch a new album of the King’s hits.
Day literally stopped the traffic outside the HMV store in London’s Oxford Street when he arrived in a gold Cadillac along with an Elvis impersonator.
He belted out a rendition of Blue Suede Shoes before a crowd of almost 1,000 people to help launch Elvis: 30 Number 1 Hits.
Elvis: 30 Number 1 Hits is expected to give Presley his first chart-topping album for a quarter of a century and could be the year’s biggest seller.
Earlier this year the rock‘n’roll pioneer notched up his 18th number one single with JXL’s remix of A Little Less Conversation, 25 years after his death. The new album brings together his top-placed singles from both the UK and US, in the same way as The Beatles’ 1 album.
It gives a chronological list of his career highs starting at Heartbreak Hotel and ending with Conversation. Presley notched up six number one albums during his lifetime, the last being a greatest hits compilation in 1977. It went to the prime slot after being given a new impetus in the wake of his death.
