Aled talking on the air - as a DJ

Former teenage choirboy Aled Jones is going from cassocks to classics after signing up as a radio DJ today.

The ex-chart star will be talking on the air for Classic FM with a new Sunday morning breakfast show as the station celebrates its tenth anniversary.

Jones, 31, who scored a hit with Walking In The Air, said: “Classical music has been an enormous part of my life and without it I’d be lost.

“I’ve always been a huge fan of Classic FM and never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d be presenting on the station.”

Classic - the UK’s biggest commercial station - recently added TV newsreader Katie Derham and actor Stephen Fry to its presenter line-up.

Jones will start his 7-9am slot in October, the same month his new eponymously-titled album is released which is tipped to top the classical chart.

The singer - who also works on BBC1’s Songs Of Praise - first found fame at the age of 12 with his top five hit from animated movie The Snowman.

He went on to sing at the wedding of Bob Geldof and the late Paula Yates.

After studying at the Royal Academy of Music, he went on to take the lead role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Welshman Jones, who now lives in west London, became a father earlier this year when his wife gave birth to daughter Emilia.

Roger Lewis, managing director of Classic FM said: “Aled’s knowledge of classical music as a performer and as a student at one of the world’s greatest conservatoires makes him a welcome addition to the Classic FM team.”
