Nick Nolte arrested in Malibu

Nick Nolte has been arrested in California on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The 61-year-old failed a sobriety test after his car was seen swerving across the road near his home in Malibu.

“It probably wasn’t alcohol,” said police captain Dan Bower.

Blood tests to determine whether Nolte had drugs in his system will not be available for several days, he added.

The Oscar-nominated actor had a reputation as a heavy drinker for many years, once describing himself as a “functioning drunk”.

But in the mid-1990s he reportedly quit alcohol and became a health and fitness enthusiast.

Nolte was nominated for Academy Awards for 1991’s The Prince of Tides and 1997’s Affliction.
