Mel Gibson rumoured to play Christ

Mel Gibson is reported to be considering playing Jesus Christ in a new film.

The actor is a Roman Catholic and is said to have been talking to theologians and looking for film locations.

The Catholic newspaper Avvenire reports the film will be called Passion and could be shot in southern Italy.

Before that Gibson is committed to playing the lead role in the movie version of the hit TV series The Singing Detective.
