Welsh MP calls for ignore Anne Robinson week

A senior Welsh politician has called for an official anti-Anne Robinson week after she insulted his countrymen.

The Conservatives' Welsh culture spokesman Glyn Davies wants next week to be designated 'Ignore Anne Robinson' week after her anti-Welsh comments on a TV show.

Police had questioned BBC director general Greg Dyke about Robinson's controversial comments on Room 101.

But Welsh Assembly Member Mr Davies said the police move was "political correctness gone mad," and the best way to deal with the Weakest Link presenter was to ignore her.

He said Welsh people were exacerbating the problem by taking her remarks to heart.

"The Welsh people currently attacking Ms Robinson are doing much more damage to Wales than she is," he said. "The only sensible response would have been to either laugh or ignore her. We should have an 'ignore Anne Robinson week.'"

Mr Davies, who said he found Robinson so "irritating and ignoring" that he refused to watch her, wants the event to be staged next week to coincide with the National Eisteddfod in Wales.

"It is best to remember that whenever individuals become so self obsessed and self important that they cannot laugh at themselves they become figures of public ridicule," he added. "We do not want this to happen to the Welsh."

Officers from North Wales Police travelled to the BBC's London headquarters two weeks ago to quiz Dyke over Robinson's rant on the Room 101 programme. They are investigating whether the BBC broke the Race Relations Act.

During the BBC2 show Robinson told host Paul Merton that the Welsh were one of her pet hates. "They are always so pleased with themselves," she said. "I've never taken to them. What are they for?"
