The latest film with an Irish setting is about to hit our screens.

The Abduction Club, by Stefan Schwartz and starring Alice Evans, Daniel Lapaine, Matthew Rhys, Sophia Myles and Edward Woodward, opening on July 19, was shot entirely on location in Ireland, chiefly at Silver Sand in Wicklow.

It is a true-story based on the little-known 18th century kidnapping for ransom of pretty young heiresses by impoverished younger sons who stood to inherit nothing from their wealthy families (the fortunes being left to the eldest son).

"I think there's probably something sexy about it," says director Schwartz, "The idea of someone kicking down the door and abducting you in the middle of the night. These guys weren't feared kidnappers who roamed the countryside, it was actually quite a cool club and to be abducted was quite a sexy thing!"
