Tom Cruise had metal rods in his eyes for new movie

Tom Cruise had metal rods inserted into his eyes to keep them open for a scene in Minority Report.

Cruise plays a policeman in the future in the film which is directed by Steven Spielberg.

The rods were used for a scene in which his character undergoes eye surgery.

"They numbed my eyes," Cruise tells www.nypost.com.

"Steven was very nervous, he wanted to shoot that as quickly as possible. It was wild. A little uncomfortable afterwards, but I liked how it looked."

Minority Report is released in the UK on July 5.
