Ripples of applause as Madonna ad-libs
Pop queen Madonna did a Judy Finnigan as she performed onstage - when her top came undone without her realising.
The singer, whose appearances in Up For Grabs have become one of the West End’s hottest tickets, ended up in a battle with her blouse last night as her buttons popped open.
Madonna - who revealed that her husband Guy Ritchie was embarrassed when people could see her ‘‘raspberry ripples’’ - managed to laugh it off with a blushing ad-lib.
Eighteen months ago Finnigan suffered the embarrassment of baring her bra to the nation when her top slipped down as she appeared on the National TV Awards.
Madonna’s inadvertent peep show came in the first scene of the sell-out play when the buttons of her black top came apart to reveal her tight grey bra.
The shocked audience giggled as she carried on playing manipulative art dealer Loren.
Her co-star Tom Irwin, who plays her husband, saved the day when he spotted the amount of material the Material Girl was showing.
He ad-libbed a line about a marital argument, telling her: ‘‘And cover yourself up.’’
Madonna blurted ‘‘oh s***’’ when she realised and was given a round of applause as both actors smiled broadly, with Madge mouthing the words ‘‘Oh my God’’, as she looked upward.
A short while later she jokingly slipped in the line ‘‘if you gave me more money to buy clothes ...’’ to her stage husband.
The blouse slipped open again and she hid her exposed chest by crossing her palms.
One audience member said: ‘‘It was hilarious. You’d expect after the explicit nature of her posing for her book Sex, Madonna could handle anything but she looked pretty embarrassed.
‘‘She didn’t notice her blouse was open at least half a minute before Tom Irwin pointed it out but she took it all in her stride.
‘‘The quip was a bit of great spontaneity on her part, and from there she went on to give a solid performance.’’
The show was a preview performance ahead of tonight’s official opening at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre.
