Neurotic TV lawyer Ally McBeal will leave court for the last time today as the final episode of the quirky comedy is screened in the US.
:: The TV series has been running since 1997 when the thirtysomething Boston single lawyer’s quirkiness and never ending quest for love hooked audiences.
:: Created by David Kelley, the show won an Emmy for best comedy, and two Golden Globe awards.
:: Bizarre fantasy sequences played out in Ally’s head made the show different from anything that had come before it. These included characters breaking out in song in courtrooms, Ally being visited by the ghost of her dead boyfriend and a dancing baby.
:: Barry White’s popularity shot up after Ally’s best friend and partner of the law firm Cage/Fish & Associates John Cage took to dancing to the artist's songs to boost his confidence.
:: Elton John, Al Green, Sting, Barry White, Tina Turner, Barry Manilow and Gladys Knight have also featured in the show.
:: Ally’s obsession with relationships rather than her professional life also provoked a 1998 Time magazine cover story asking, ‘‘Is Feminism Dead?’’
:: Ratings began to fall after Robert Downey Jr, who had played Ally’s most promising love interest, was forced to leave the show after details of his drug addiction emerged.
:: There are two soundtracks from the series, ‘‘Songs from Ally McBeal’’ and ‘‘Heart and Soul New Songs From Ally McBeal Featuring Vonda Shepard’’’’. Shepard is the singer in the bar that Ally and her work colleagues regularly visit.
:: Calista Flockhart was born in Freeport, Illinois. There is no publicly confirmed date of birth for Calista, but it is thought to be November 1964. Her name is Greek for ‘‘beautiful one’’.
:: Ally McBeal has earned a fair amount of column inches for the character’s short skirts, and also fears that at one point Calista Flockhart was suffering from a severe eating disorder after she became very thin.
