A member of pop group Liberty X was recovering in hospital today after injuring himself in a TV tug-of-war match.

Kevin Simm and his fellow band members, the runners up in ITV’s Popstars, took on another band, All Stars, as part of a stunt for Channel 4’s Popworld.

‘‘When the rope went he impaled himself on a pole and it is thought he has bruised his kidney,’’ a spokesman for the band said.

He added that the star was taken to a central London hospital yesterday and it is thought he will be kept in overnight for observation.

Liberty X were called Liberty but a court ruled earlier this year that the name belonged to a funk band based in Walthamstow, east London.

The band were formed from the losing five final contenders on the ITV show. The winners went on to become Hear’Say.
