Elton John re-records hit for charity

Sir Elton John has re-recorded his Seventies hit Your Song with opera star Alessandrio Safina to raise money for charity, it was announced today.

The track will spearhead fundraising efforts for this summer’s Sport Relief extravaganza and will be released in June.

Sport Relief is a collaboration between Comic Relief and BBC Sport which will see the world of sport helping to raise money for children and young people in the UK and around the world.

Sir Elton said: ‘‘It is inspiring that sport has the power to change lives. As a huge sports fan, I know the power and allure of sport.

‘‘People like me, who live for music and sport, can use their passion to help make real changes to the lives of others.’’

The new version of the song, originally a hit in 1971, will be premiered on BBC Radio 2 on Friday afternoon during Phill Jupitus’s show, who is sitting in for Steve Wright.

The video will be shown during BBC1’s FA Cup Final coverage on Saturday.
