The Talented Mr Ripley sequel cannot be released yet because a technical error has left smears over the picture.

Producers discovered the error after filming of the £9m (€14.6m) movie was completed in Italy last year.

Ripley's Game stars John Malkovich as murderer Tom Ripley, alongside Dougray Scott and Ray Winstone.

Distributors Fine Line are reportedly refusing to accept the finished film until thousands of pounds of remastering has been done.

Producer Simon Bosanquet told the Sunday Express: "The film is still in the labs because there are some problems. We're making certain adjustments. They're to do with marks and abrasions on the film.

"But there is no question that the film won't be released."

Ripley's Game is set about 20 years after The Talented Mr Ripley.
