Model and actress Liz Hurley today gave birth to a baby boy.
‘‘Elizabeth Hurley is delighted to announce the birth of her son, Damian Charles,’’ the model’s spokeswoman said in a statement.
‘‘Both mother and baby are happy and healthy. Damian was born at 12.22pm on 4 April.’’
Hurley, 36, announced she was pregnant in November last year and named Hollywood movie producer Steve Bing as the father.
‘‘Elizabeth Hurley is delighted to confirm that she is expecting a baby in April and Stephen Bing is the father,’’ she said in a statement.
She began a relationship with the multi-millionaire playboy soon after splitting from long-term love Hugh Grant.
But the actress and model was stunned when Bing issued a public statement casting doubt on whether the baby was his.
‘‘Ms Hurley and I were not in an exclusive relationship when she became pregnant. It is her choice to be a single mother,’’ he said.
‘‘If indeed I am the father, I will be an extremely involved and responsible parent.’’
Hurley said she was deeply hurt by his comments and insisted that Bing was the father.
‘‘I’m deeply distraught by Stephen Bing publicly declaring that he hadn’t been in an ‘exclusive relationship’ with me.
‘‘This was the first I had heard of this and the implications are very painful, especially as I am shortly to give birth to his child,’’ she said.
‘‘I loved Stephen enormously during the 18 months we were together. Contrary to erroneous reports, we were still very much happy together when I discovered I was pregnant.
‘‘I was completely loyal and faithful to Stephen throughout this time as, indeed, he assured me he was to me.’’
Bing was reported to want a DNA test to prove paternity, which could only be carried out once the baby was born.
But Hurley later expressed hopes that the matter could be resolved without resorting to lawyers.
‘‘Unfortunately, it’s all got very silly,’’ she said. ‘‘It would be horrible to do anything legal and nasty and I hope it never will come to that. We are both nice people.’’
Bing, 35, the grandson of a New York real estate magnate, is estimated to be worth around €650m.
He has worked as a screenwriter, producer and director on movies including Married With Children and Get Carter.
He has been romantically linked to a number of Hollywood leading ladies, including Farrah Fawcett, Uma Thurman and Sharon Stone.
If the baby were proved to be his, Hurley would be entitled to millions of dollars in child support until the child was at least 18.
Hurley has been supported throughout her pregnancy by Grant, with whom she split in 2000.
The pair had remained close since the end of their 13 year relationship and the actor reportedly accompanied her to a pre-natal check-up at St John and St Elizabeth Hospital in St John’s Wood, north London.
Hurley told one interviewer that she imagined being an over-protective mother: ‘‘I’m going to be awful. I want a mummy’s boy who sits on my knee all day and tells me he loves me.’’
