It's radio one-abes

British music wannabes and unsigned acts will be given the airwaves for an entire day on BBC Radio 1 to encourage new acts, it was announced today.

Potential hitmakers of all kinds are being encouraged to send demos and discs to the station giving them an opportunity to be played.

OneMusic Day, on May 6, will also see the relaunch of the station’s website (www.bbc.co.uk/radio1) which will include a section giving advice to hopefuls.

It is designed to be a one-stop shop for expert advice on all aspects of the music business connecting musicians to those in the know.

Music-makers are being encouraged to send in their contributions from today.

And several lucky acts will be invited to play live during DJ Steve Lamacq’s show Lamacq Live following in the tradition of bands such as Linkin Park, Coldplay, Faithless and Air who are past live contributors to the show.

Radio 1’s music policy editor Alex Jones Donelly said:

‘‘This isn’t a talent contest, but it is about making sure new music gets recognised and nurtured as much as possible.

‘‘OneMusic is about making sure music lovers get heard by the right people and that’s very important to Radio 1.’’
