'Time to move on' says Sir Trevor

Newscaster Sir Trevor McDonald says he would consider quitting ITV's News At Ten programme.

Sir Trevor, 62, began his career as a reporter with ITV in 1973 and was recently voted the nation's favourite presenter.

He has told the Times newspaper: "I've been around here for a hell of a long time and I need to make some decisions."

He went on: "I just can't ride this rollercoaster forever and two years ago I started actually talking to people about what the future of my career could be. But ITN came up with the right offer."

He added: "I don't want to stop working yet. If anybody came up with an offer, I would seriously think about it."

Asked whether he would contemplate a move to the BBC, he said: "Even if it meant going anywhere. I've been here so long, they'd be delighted to see the back of me."

But Steve Anderson, ITV's Head of News, and current affairs, told the newspaper: "We'll fight very hard to keep him."
