Jim Broadbent thought he was wrong for Iris role

Jim Broadbent says he originally thought he was "entirely wrong" for a part in Iris.

Broadbent plays Iris Murdoch's husband John Bayley in the film.

He is nominated for this year's Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Bayley.

Broadbent says he changed his mind after reading the film's script: "I read the script and it got me, and that initial reading is always a good sign".

Broadbent's mother suffered from Alzheimer's.

"I knew that world, in a way, so I knew how accurate and honest a piece of work the script was.

"I realised after doing the film that I never once had to stop and think, 'How would you behave with an Alzheimer's patient?' I never had to question that all."
