Oscar extra too much for the academy

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has filed a lawsuit against a company that offers replica Oscar statuettes equipped with male genitalia.

Pipedream Products, of Los Angeles, sells its own Oscar statuettes under the name of Stud of the Year.

The real golden Oscar is 13 inches tall, weighs 8 1/2 pounds and has no sex organs, according to court documents filed in federal court.

The academy alleges Pipedream is "importing or manufacturing and selling a large number of obscene or kitsch items making unauthorised use of the academy's Oscars copyright and design mark."

The academy is seeking an injunction to prevent the company from selling any more statuettes.

"Anyone who owns a trademark doesn't want an obscene version of it circulating," said the academy's Executive Director Bruce Davis. "If you make an anatomically correct Michelin man, the Michelin guys will come after you."
