South Park has been named the most offensive programme on US TV.

The animated series came top for sexual references, swearing and violence in a survey by an American TV watchdog.

The Parents Television Council rated MTV shows Undergrads and Celebrity Deathmatch second and third most offensive.

South Park was said to have an average of 126 "offensive" moments every hour, with Undergrads and Celebrity Deathmatch scoring averages of 73 and 66.

The Parents Television Council report concluded that basic cable TV is more offensive than the main US networks.

The council's president and founder L Brent Bozell III said: "The study clearly reveals that the cable industry is eclipsing the broadcast networks' ability to crank out offensive programming in prime time.

"Unless the cable networks realise the error in such a business strategy, we will continue to see the further degradation of cable programming."
