Clubbers have voted Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love you their most hated Christmas number one.

Clubbers have voted Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love you their most hated Christmas number one.

It was followed closely by The Spice Girls' Goodbye and Cliff Richard's Mistletoe And Wine.

Mary's Boy Child by Boney M proved the most popular festive chart-topper in a survey of 18 to 24 year old clubbers.

Other favourite Christmas number ones included The Human League's Don't You Want Me, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, Slade's Merry Christmas Everyone and Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas.

The "most hated" Christmas top five was completed by another Cliff Richard hit, Saviours Day, and Michael Jackson's Earth Song.

The Clubbinuk Lifestyle survey discovered that only 11% of those asked usually bought a Christmas number one record, with those who abstained claiming they either hated the record or thought all Christmas number ones were "tacky."

A total of 76% agreed that Christmas records should have a festive theme, and not be as "commercial" as they are today.

Adam Weaver, commercial director for Clubbinuk said: "Christmas number ones are a tradition throughout the UK, but our research has shown that it's a tradition which has not necessarily improved with age.

"Many young people prefer the records from the '70's and '80's because they've either got a Christmas theme or they're classic 'school disco' songs that they can dance along to.

"There seems to be an unfortunate trend emerging where manufactured boy and girl bands release songs at Christmas knowing that their hardcore fans will buy them, spoiling the fun of original Christmas songs making it to the top spot."
