Pop star Harvey recovering after 'axe' attack

Pop singer Brian Harvey was today recovering after being attacked outside a city centre night club.

The former E17 singer under went emergency surgery after he was hit over the head with a sharp-bladed weapon.

The 27-year-old had just finished performing a sell-out set at The Works club in Nottingham’s Trinity Square when he was attacked in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A spokesman for Nottingham Police said it appeared four or five men of mixed race had approached the singer near the entrance to the club as he walked towards his car with two local 18-year-old female fans.

After the incident Detective Inspector Dave Hoare, of Notts police CID, said: ‘‘We do not know at this stage what the weapon used was. There were thoughts that it may have been an axe or a machete but it is more likely it was something smaller.’’

He added that the two young female fans had rushed back to the club and raised the alarm.

Harvey was first taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre for treatment, but later transferred to the plastic surgery unit at Nottingham’s City Hospital.

Dave Pitman, a spokesman for Harvey, said yesterday: ‘‘He is now in hospital and in a stable condition following surgery. The doctors expect Brian to make a full recovery.’’

He added: ‘‘His family and friends are with him and we would like to thank everyone who has sent messages of support.’’
