MUSIC NEWS: We haven’t heard much from Tom Waits in recent years, but ANTI-records has announced the re-release of the seven albums the 67-year-old had put out on the label.

Most interesting of the albums, all of which have been remastered, could be a remixed version of Real Gone, the excellent 2004 offering that gave us such tracks as ‘Hoist That Rag’ and ‘Don’t Go into That Barn’.

The seven albums will be available on vinyl and CD, and will be released at intervals through next month, beginning with Bad As Me on November 10.

Fans will eagerly watch this space to see whether the releases are just a money-making exercise, or whether the Californian could be tempted to hit the road for his first tour since 2008.

Collaborations are the name of the game in the music business these days, and one that’s definitely worth a listen is ‘Only Once Away My Son’, from Brian Eno and My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields.

It won’t be topping the charts, but the nine-minute instrumental will provide you with a sonically- interesting diversion. Headphones recommended.

Tickets went on sale this morning for Sam Smith’s appearance at the 3Arena in Dublin on March 30, while Future Islands have announced a gig for Donnybrook Stadium on June 19.

The Guinness Cork Jazz Festival hasn’t quite hit the heights in terms of lineup that some had hoped for in its 40th year, but there’s still plenty good music to be had around the city.

Kenny Garrett and Michael Wollny are probably the pick of the jazz gigs, while Soulé at Cyprus Avenue and Alison Moyet at the Opera House are two of the attractions at the poppier end of the scale.

Next weekend, Moxie are at Cyprus Avenue on Saturday, while the Go Deep are on one of their dance excursions to West Cork for an appearance at Connollys of Leap.

FILM TIPS: Poor old Michael Fassbender. The Kerry actor who once could do no wrong seems to have made a series of poor choices in recent times, and British newspaper the Guardian ran a headline earlier in the week, ‘Can Michael Fassbender survive his year of flops?’.

The Snowman’s limp performance at the box office follows on from Assassin’s Creed and Song to Song.

For now, the 40-year-old has other things on his mind as he’s been honeymooning in Italy with his new bride Alicia Vikander, but you’d imagine there’ll be a serious chat with his agent when he gets back on the horse.

In this week’s release list, Thor: Ragnarok has been getting the general thumbs-up since it hit cinemas on Tuesday, and will undoubtedly be one of the bigger releases of the weekend.

Blade Runner really has been getting a mixed reaction from punters, with the common response being something along the lines of “Visually impressive, but too long”.

In contrast, The Death Of Stalin has been getting very good word of mouth.

Of course, fright night is on the horizon, with scary film options including the annual Horrorthon at the IFI in Dublin, and a screening of John Carpenter’s Halloween at Triskel in Cork on Tuesday.

COMEDY CAPERS: David O’Doherty has already sold out his Nov 25 appearance at the Everyman in Cork, but the Dublin funnyman has announced a return to the venue for January 20.

Flight of the Conchords are also hitting the road for their first tour in seven years, with an Irish appearance at 3Arena on March 25.

ON THE TELLY: Stranger Things 2 is available on Netflix today for a monster binge, while TV’s other landmark moment of the weekend is the start of Blue Planet II on BBC One on Sunday night.
