Scene and Heard: What's happening in the world of arts

FILM TIPS: Rocky really looks like being the story that will never die, with Sylvester Stallone taking to Instagram to confirm that he’ll be directing Michael B Jordan in Creed 2 next year. According to Stallone, it’s “one more round”, but we already suspect a rematch will happen.

A sequel of a different sort will land in November 2019, when Frozen 2 gets a whole new generation of little girls singing along to a slightly more mature Elsa and Anna.

Among the interesting releases today is The Snowman, with Michael Fassbender; while the smallies can be occupied with The Lego Ninjago Movie, complete with Jackie Chan on one of the lead voices.

Selected cinemas also have documentaries on two fascinating Irish figures: It’s Not Dark Yet, on film-maker Simon Fitzmaurice and his battle with motor neurone disease; and Kevin Roche: The Quiet Architect, about the Mitchelstown-raised figure who has claim to the title of Ireland’s greatest ever architect.

The Salesman won the best foreign language Oscar earlier this year, and the Iranian drama shows at Cork Cine Club in St John’s College next Thursday.

COMEDY CAPERS: Do you know what you’ll be doing on September 27 next year? Settling in with a new teacher, still recovering from Electric Picnic, etc. Well, if you can plan that far ahead, you might want to join Jason Manford at Cork Opera House. The Stockport standup is one of the funnier British stand-ups on the circuit, and his Irish tour also takes in such venues as Limerick University (Sept 25); and Vicar St, Dublin (28-29).

Impractical Jokers are at 3Arena on Sunday, while the great Micky Flanagan is the same venue on October 19-20.

GIG WISE: There are still some tickets for the Rubberbandits at Cork Opera House tonight, while Lisa O’Neill takes to the stage over in Coughlans.

Also on Leeside, Little Hours play Triskel Christchurch next Friday.

Mundy’s Jelly Legs album really is 21-years-old, and he’s marking the event with a tour that includes DeBarra’s of Clonakilty next Friday; and Triskel in Cork the following night.

Glen Hansard is sure to pack out DeBarra’s on December 13, so be sure to get a spoke in early if you want to go.

Way up in the big city of Dublin, Elbow and John Grant will be sharing a double bill at the 3Arena on February 24, while Belle & Sebastian have announced Vicar Street gigs for March 26-27.

Don McLean will be 73 by the time he plays four nights at the same venue in May (20-23).

CLASSICAL & OPERA: Linda Kenny and co will be be joined by singing priest Fr Ray Kelly for their Alleluia concert next Friday at the North Cathedral in Cork.

Contemporary classical group There Is An Island bring their haunting melodies to Triskel in Cork tomorrow.

Further east in Wexford, the annual opera festival kicks off next Thursday, with possible highlights including a version of Medea directed by Fiona Shaw; and a new operatic adaptation of two James Joyce stories.

ON THE TELLY: Colin Farrell and Niall Horan will be flying the flag for Ireland on the Graham Norton Show tonight, while the impressive guest list also includes Nicole Kidman and Bryan Cranston.

George Michael: Freedom, an autobiographical documentary the star was working on before he died on Christmas Day last year, will be broadcast on Channel 4 on Monday.
