Silver basket has $6,000 estimate

This Irish silver basket by John Hamilton, Dublin c1745, is one of a number of lots of Irish silver at Sotheby’s in New York next Wednesday.

It will be offered without reserve at a sale entitled ‘Luxe: The art of the Table’ and it has an estimate of $6,000-9,000.

The handle is crested with the motto Loyal au Mort.

Other Irish silver lots include a shaped circular salver with rococo rim by the same maker ($7,000-9,000) and an assembled group of 24 pieces of William III and Irish silver knives and spoons from the 18th century ($5,000-7,000).

This Tessuto Battuto vase by Carlo Scarpa (1906 1978) was designed in the period from 1936-40. The only single-owner collection of works by the renowned Venetian architect and designer, comes up at Christie’s in New York on May 4.

There are around 90 pieces of Italian art glass in the sale, which provides an overview of the pioneering styles Scarpa created for MVM Cappelin and subsequently Venini. The vase is estimated at $20,000-30,000.
