Ski and travel posters from an era of glamorous jet-setters

Ever-popular and collectible vintage ski posters will come up at Christie’s Interiors auction at South Kensington in London next Wednesday.

The sale will include around 100 posters by the most sought after artists depicting the most iconic ski resorts in an era of glamour.

The spectacular ski scenery of Switzerland, Norway, Germany, and the US will feature. A poster designed by Martin Peikert advertising the Swiss resort of Les Diablerets is typical of his bold style and features a couple ascending the mountain on a ski lift.

It is estimated at £4,000 to £6,000 (€4,700 to €7,053).

There was a record at last year’s January sale for a poster of Gstaad by Swiss graphic artist Alex Walter Digglemann, a lithograph dating to 1934.

The auction will present a larger version of Diggelmann’s design, estimated at £20,000 to £30,000.

Prices will range from £1,200 to £30,000.

Meanwhile, the estimate for a 1950s Aer Lingus poster at Whyte’s 548 lot sale in Dublin on January 21 is a much more modest €300 to €500.

Designed by Tom Eckersley, it advertises European routes, including the then newly opened route to Rome.

The linen-backed poster features a Vickers Viscount 700, which Aer Lingus used from 1954.
