Canadian police find unusual way of deterring motorists from drink driving
In a smart move to promote their ’Don’t Drink and Drive!’ message, Kensington Police Service have added an unusual punishment for any driver who is arrested while drunk.
In addition to the usual fine and suspension from driving, motorists will also be subjected to Nickelback’s 2001 album, Silver Side Up.
The town police announced the threat with their post on Facebook, entitled "Kensington Police Drinking and Driving Gift. Christmas Bonus Edition".
It starts off with some good advice: "So, the Holiday Season is upon us and that means more social events, staff parties and alcohol based libations. Now, Because of that fact, it logically means more people need to plan their nights driving duties. Anything and everything you can do to eliminate the chances of drinking and driving."
Outlining their threat, it continues: "Now, with that being said, know that the Kensington Police Service will be out for the remainder of year looking for those dumb enough to feel they can drink and drive.
"Now, now, no need to thank us, we figure if you are foolish enough to get behind the wheel after drinking then a little Chad Kroeger and the boys is the perfect gift for you.
"So please, lets not ruin a perfectly good unopened copy of Nickelback. You don’t drink and drive and we won’t make you listen to it."
The tongue-in-cheek post garnered a lot of positive reaction and the officers explained that it was purely to relay the serious message about drink driving.
They said: "We actually don’t hate Nickelback, we are just using a different approach to get an age old message communicated.
"And if we tongue in cheekly use a multi-million dollar, internationally successful band as that message’s vessel... Well, as long as it starts the don’t drink and drive dialogue, we’re happy with that."
Well said, we’re sure the band don’t mind.
