Sight study
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of sight loss for those aged over 50,
with over 7,000 new cases diagnosed every year, according to www.amd.ie.
Now a small study which assessed the diets of 883 people, aged 55 and older in Portugal, suggests a Mediterranean diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, healthy fats and fish and drinking caffeine may lower our chances of getting AMD.
Researchers who presented the findings recently at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in Chicago, found an association between the Mediterranean diet and a 35% lower risk of AMD and suggested that among people who consumed high levels of caffeine (about 78 milligrams a day ) 54% did not have AMD and 45% had the eye disease.
