FILM TIPS: The Young Offenders is in cinemas today and you’d imagine the Cork comedy will do flying business in its home city over the weekend, as well as drawing plenty punters in foreign counties. 

Another Irish film you’ll be seeing plenty about is The Siege Of Jadotville, starring Jamie Dornan. Due on Netflix on October 7, the incredible true tale of deeds by the Irish army in the Congo in 1961 also gets a limited cinema release next week.

From Sunday, Triskel in Cork has Pedro Almodóvar’s Julieta, and Kerry filmmaker Patrick O’Neill’s The Uncountable Laughter Of The Sea.

MUSIC NEWS: Kings Of Leon have a new album on the way, and singer Caleb Followill has told NME about fall-outs within the band that hastened their demise before they made up again for the forthcoming Wall (October 14).

“We’d only see each other for the hour-and-a-half before a show,” he admitted, describing how members of the group would travel separately on tour.

There’s been a few titters at the news that Zayn Malik is to publish an autobiography at the age of 23, but in fairness, the former One Direction member has packed quite a bit into his life since the band were formed in 2010.

The Bradford native, who has been pursuing a solo career since last year, has also been in the news recently for cancelling a show in Dubai in October due to ongoing issues with anxiety.

The line-up for Other Voices’ trip to Austin has yet to be announced, but the Dingle-based concert brand is to put on a series of shows in the Texan city next month that will combine Irish and American talent. We’ll see the fruits of their labour on RTÉ in the spring.

Also, Glastonbury organisers have confirmed that they will be taking a break in 2018, but next year’s festival will go ahead at its usual site.

GIG WISE: Lisa Hannigan has been getting airplay from all sorts of sources for her recent At Swim album, and her tour of Ireland that takes in such venues as Vicar Street, Dublin, December 10; Cork Opera House, December 12; and Limetree, Limerick, December 16.

Little Green Cars have announced two acoustic shows: Everyman, Cork, December 13; and Pavilion, Dun Laoghaire, December 20.

Alexis Taylor from Hot Chip goes solo at Cyprus Avenue in Cork tonight, while Grace Jones has added a second gig at the Olympia (September 21 and 22) in Dublin.

THEATRE NIGHTS: The news that a new Cork-set play by Kevin Barry will debut at the Everyman on January 30 dominated the Leeside theatre’s programme announcement earlier this week.

Another biggie on the way at the venue is Jack, a new play about political and hurling giant Jack Lynch, penned by Declan Hassett.

From Monday, the Everyman also has a production of Enda Walsh’s classic play Disco Pigs by a UK-based company.

At the other end of the Walsh timeline, his latest work, Arlington, is to get a four-week run at St Ann’s Warehouse in New York in May next year.

Closer to home, the Comeraghs Wild Festival is under way in Co Waterford, and its mountainy theatre offering takes place at Mahon Falls tonight. Curse is the tale of a traditional farmer struggling with the new Ireland.

ALL AND SUNDRY: Róisín O’Farrell’s exhibition of paintings opens at Hayfield Manor in Cork tomorrow.

Cork Central Library is the venue for the first lecture in a series of talks being organised by Cork Decorative and Fine Arts Society.

On Wednesday at 7pm, a lecture will address Aspects of the Arts & Crafts of The Honan Chapel.
