Antiques in brief

Modern and contemporary work by artists like Sir John Lavery, Jack B Yeats, Roderic O’Conor, Sir William Orpen, Mary Swanzy, FE McWilliam, Gottfried Helnwein and Rowan Gillespie can be seen at the RHA Gallagher Gallery from 10am to 5pm today and from 10am to 3pm tomorrow. Viewing gets underway at New Bond St in London next Thursday.

No less than four works by Patrick Scott will feature at Hegarty’s evening sale in Bandon on September 13. They are from the collection of the late artist and weaver Barbara Harte of Sweden. Viewing for the auction gets underway at 12pm next Friday.

Photography exhibition

A collection of award-winning and highly commended press images is open to the public at AIB, 66 South Mall, Cork until September 9. There were awards across nine categories in the Press Photographer of the Year, 2016 competition.

First place in the portrait category went to Inpho photographer Dan Sheridan for what the judges termed his “simple, classically composed portrait” of Munster and Ireland rugby player Peter O’Mahoney.

James Adam sale

Fine furniture, porcelain, silver, objets d’art, old master and modern paintings and graphics, icons and exotic items from the collection of Bryan Alton go on view at James Adam in Dublin from 1 pm to 5pm tomorrow and from 10am to 5pm on Monday.

The auction of 319 lots gets underway at noon on Tuesday. Dr Alton, who died in 1991, was president of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, master warden of the Corporation of Goldsmiths of Dublin and a board member of the National Gallery of Ireland.

Matthews House

Over 550 lots will come under the hammer at Matthews ouse contents sale at 568, Wellington Road, Dublin 4 at 1.30pm tomorrow. There is viewing today from 11am to 5pm and from 10am to the start of the sale tomorrow.

Antique Fair

The Irish Antique Dealers Fair takes place at the RDS in Dublin from September 23-25. IADA chairman George Stacpoole said the fair has been synonymous with quality for over half a century, firstly in the Mansion House and now at the RDS.

“We have a carefully selected blend of antique and contemporary exhibitors, allowing all ages to focus on the unique yet affordable design that appeals to them” he said.

Beit study

Contemplation of an old Beit family photograph is the title of a photographic exhibition by David McDermott and Peter McGough at Solomon Fine Art in Dublin until September 12.

The idea behind the exhibition was to capture some of the scenes at Russborough House through the eyes of the Beits. Work by McDermott and McGough is in the Metropolitan and Whitney Museums in New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
